December 30th, 2016, 4:00 pm by Greg

Happy New Year

The work week is over, and now it’s time for some serious end-of-the-year fun.

But before we head out for the BIG New Year’s Eve weekend we’d like to send out a thank-you to everyone who dropped by this week to add encouragement, support, proof-reading and, yes, criticism, too. And thanks for helping to spread the word about Nippertown.com.

Of course, we couldn’t possibly cover the wide, wonderful scope of art and entertainment offerings around Nippertown without a dedicated bunch of wonderful writers, photographers, artists, tipsters and other assorted enablers who continually enrich us all with their contributions. So a big salute goes out to this week’s community contributors:

Rudy Lu
Ed Conway
Andrzej Pilarczyk
Fred Rudofsky
Kathy Conway
Albert Brooks
Timothy Reidy
Don Wilcock
Timothy Raab
Glenn Kaplowitz
Steve Nover
Joseph Deuel
Stanley A. Johnson
Michael Hochanadel
Kirsten Ferguson
David Brickman

Please consider adding your name to this list. Just send us something – a review, preview, interview, photo, list, video, rant, crayon drawing or whatever’s on your mind. Remember, Nippertown is your hometown, and we can’t possibly do this without your help.

And thanks to all of the folks from the area venues and organizations who were gracious enough to provide us with review tickets and/or photo passes for their events:

The Massry Center for the Arts at the College of St. Rose, Albany
The Egg, Albany
BSP Lounge, Kingston
Albany Institute of History & Art, Albany

Thanks for keeping Nippertown alive… and lively,

Sara Ayers
Greg Haymes

Yes, it’s that time of year once again – best of the year list-time, that is. We’re gathering together Best of 2016 from media outlets, our own contributors and our readers, too.

Nippertown’s Greg Haymes has compiled some lists of his favorite albums, concerts and more:

First of all, I’m only one man. Which means that I can’t be everywhere at once, and I can’t see every concert. I missed a lot of great shows (or at least shows that I thought would be great) this past year – everything from Freakwater at the Low Beat to the terrific Tedeschi Trucks triple-bill at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

So what you read here is just the low-down on my favorite concerts of the year – ones that I actually witnessed – in chronological order. As they say, your results may vary:

Yes, it’s that time of year once again – best of the year list-time, that is. We’re gathering together Best of 2016 from various media outlets, our own contributors and our readers, too.

Here’s the list of the Top 50 Concerts of the Year compiled by Nippertown contributor and man-about-town, Steve Nover:

It’s that time of the year again when I try not to be excessive, no really; leaving shows off the list is about as difficult as trying to not let recent concerts have an undue influence since they’re more fresh in the mind… the subjectivity leads to realizing I should have put one higher or lower days after finishing, but one thing is sure – Greater Nippertown is culturally rich with local talent, and the free summer concert schedule is as good as anywhere in the country.

50. Arlo Guthrie @ The Egg’s Hart Theatre, Albany, May 6 & November 5
49. Bridge Jazz Festival featuring Ellis & Delfeayo Marsalis, Arch Stanton Quartet, the No BS! Brass Band @ Massry Center for the Arts at the College of St. Rose, Albany, February 27
48. Fatoumata Diawara @ Sanctuary for Independent Media, Troy, April 29
