Happy Anniversary to Caffe Lena!

Each May, Caffe Lena celebrates its anniversary with a big, special concert at Skidmore College’s Zankel Music Center in Saratoga Springs. Often the concerts feature musicians who outgrew the tiny Caffe decades ago. But don’t get the idea that Lena’s legacy is all about the past.

To celebrate their 56th anniversary, this year’s Caffe Lena Anniversary Concert – which takes place at 7pm on Saturday (May 21) will feature four of the brightest shining stars on the folk horizon.

As Caffè Lena Executive Director Sarah Craig explains, “With this concert, we want to prove that our legacy is not a closed book. In fact, it’s an unfolding story; one that’s being told by great new artists like Troy’s Sean Rowe, who cut his teeth at Caffè open mic nights before becoming an international star, and Michigan bluegrassers Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys, who are poised to take off as well. Southern mountain balladeers Anna & Elizabeth beautifully show us how the music of our past relates to the present, and the Suitcase Junket’s rollicking one-man-band sensation was so brilliant at last year’s anniversary that we just had to bring him back for an encore.”

Four great up-and-coming stars on the folk scene come together on one stage for one very special evening.

Tickets are on sale now priced at $30 & $50; $15 for students.

And in June, construction will begin on a transformational renovation of the 56-year-old Caffè, which will result in better sightlines and sound; a modern kitchen and amenities; and improved artist accommodations. More importantly, the renovated Caffè — which, in every way, honors the grand legacy of its founder Lena Spencer — will be fully accessible, with the addition of an elevator allowing all members of the community to be part of the Caffè’s history and its future.

While all the renovations are going on this summer, Caffè Lena will continue to present shows offsite at the Grove at Neumann, located at 233 Lake Avenue in Saratoga Springs. Regular performances will run through August at the Grove, with a projected opening of the renovated Caffè in October.
