Peter Wolf – the hot-wired, hyper-kinetic frontman for the J. Geils Band – has been making annual tour stops in Greater Nippertown for several years now, usually at The Egg in Albany, and that’s where you’ll find him again on Friday (May 13).

But this time around, Wolf and his band, the Midnight Travelers, are rolling into town in support of a new album, A Cure for Loneliness, released just last month. The new album’s thematic centerpiece is the opening track, “Rolling On,” a spare yet insistent statement of purpose that underlines Wolf’s stature as a world-class rock ‘n’ roll survivor.

Post continues below...

“It’s a song about getting through life and trying to prevail, and that’s what the whole record is about,” Wolf explains. “It’s basically saying, ‘I’m still here.’ Change is constant, but it’s not necessarily negative, so you just have to keep rolling on.”

While Wolf is well known for digging deep into such musical genres as soul, R&B, rock and roll, you might not expect him to acknowledge the influence of bluegrass, but that’s exactly what you get with the album’s ridiculously radical reworking of the J. Geils hit “Love Stinks.” It’s an unexpected left-hand turn, but Wolf doesn’t see it quite the same way.

“I see this album as a continuation of a body of work that I’ve been creating for a long, long time,” he says. “Each album is a challenge, and every one of them has been a learning experience. I think that they’ve become more personal and revealing as I’ve continued. I still feel the way I felt when I started out decades ago. I’m just trying to prevail and continue to grow as an artist… and to keep rolling on with music as a cure for loneliness.”

  1. Michael Eck says:

One of the many joys of writing about rock and roll for so many years was a delightful conversation with Peter Wolf about the humbling talent and artistry of Merle Haggard. Wolf was doing a whole string of interviews and, justifiably, he was getting as close to autopilot as Peter Wolf can. When talk turned to Haggard, he lit up and became the young record geek again.

Missing Merle now, as I’m sure he is.
