The New Riders of the Purple Sage rode into the recently renovated and re-opened Cohoes Music Hall to play the first rock concert there since, well, ever?

With guitarist-founder David Nelson and longtime pedal steel guitarist Buddy Cage (on board since 1971 when he replaced Jerry Garcia) at the helm, the band not only carries on the country-rock tradition that they pioneered back in the ’70s, but with guitarist Michael Falzarano, bassist Ronnie Penque and drummer Johnny Markowski also took delightful detours through everything from the blues to bluegrass throughout the evening.

The Cohoes Music Hall is proving to be a fabulous venue – an intimate concert hall with a sizable dance floor – and the New Riders certainly liked what they saw (and heard) there. Let’s hope that the hall continues to present such artists as the New Riders, Amy Helm & the Handsome Strangers (who played an impressive show there last month) and the great Texas singer-songwriter-rocker Alejandro Escovedo (who will take the stage tonight – Wednesday, May 11).
