The legendary Texas roots rocker and No Depression’s Artist of the Decade, Alejandro Escovedo returns to Greater Nippertown on Wednesday evening (May 11), making his debut at the intimate Cohoes Music Hall. He’s bringing along a new band – featuring cellist Brian Standefer and keyboardist Sean Giddings – and chances are he’ll be previewing some songs from his new album, Burn Something Beautiful, slated for release in September.

Post continues below...

Escovedo made his Local 518 debut as a member of the True Believers at Albany’s long-defunct but not forgotten QE2, and he’s been a Greater Nippertown fave ever since, playing with a variety of musicians (and musical formats) at such venues as Union College’s Memorial Chapel, Revolution Hall, the Calvin Theatre, Valentine’s Music Hall, The Egg, Club Helsinki and more. And he’s never disappointed…

Here’s what some of’s writers have had to say about Escovedo’s concerts:

Greg Haymes: “Alejandro Escovedo has been knocking out one great album after another since his solo debut in 1992 – and he made some mighty fine albums before that with such bands as Rank & File and the True Believers. Sadly, he still hasn’t been able to break out of cult status and into mainstream success. The small crowd of discerning folks at the Calvin Theatre last week didn’t care. They already knew that talent is no guarantee of success in the music biz. And they already knew about Escovedo’s towering musical talent.”

Steve Stock: “Escovedo was playing a down-home honky-tonk, and most of the near-capacity audience was crowded onto the impromptu dance floor in front of the stage, singing along to a slinky cover of the Stones’ ‘Beast of Burden’ as if their lives depended on it.”

Bokonon: In Hudson, songs from Big Station (‘San Antonio Rain,’ ‘Bottom of the World’) take on a new shimmer. Songs from Gravity (‘Paradise’) remember leaner, younger days and sing again. And ‘Castanets’ just fucking rocks, don’t argue, it’s the truth.”

Richard Brody: “I love Alejandro the rocker, but it is Alejandro the poet who makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and applaud.”

Andrzej Pilarczyk: “I’m still trying to catch my breath…”

The Alejandro Escovedo Trio lands at the Cohoes Music Hall in Cohoes on Wednesday evening (May 11). Lucette kicks off the show at 8pm. Tickets are $25 in advance; $30 at the door. Don’t miss it!
