Bits ‘n’ Pieces: Emily Nussbaum, Levon Helm & “The Happiest Man in the World”

On Monday, she was honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. On Thursday (April 21) Emily Nussbaum – television critic for The New Yorker – will give her first post-Pulitzer talk at Skidmore College’s Palamountain Hall in Saratoga Springs. During her 6:30pm lecture, she will discuss her time in journalism, the relationship between journalism and media and how online journalism is changing. Admission is free, and the talk will be followed by a reception.

The great singer-drummer-mandolinist Levon Helm died four years ago today (April 19), and in his memory, his daughter Amy Helm is hosting an open house at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock from 10am-2pm on Saturday (April 23). Admission is free. PS: Amy Helm will also be performing in concert at the Cohoes Music Hall at 8pm on Friday with Connor Kennedy & Minstrel opening the show.

It looks like some kind of Battle Royale might be shaping up between Hamell on Trial and veteran singer-songwriter Eric Bibb. Hamell – who is in the midst of a month-long Wednesday night happy hour residency at the Low Beat – declared himself to be The Happiest Man in the World with his 2014 album. But now it seems that veteran singer-songwriter Eric Bibb is attempting to wrestle the crown from Hamell with his new album slated for release by Stony Plain Records on May 6, also titled The Happiest Man in the World. No word on when the showdown is slated to take place, but several possible referees for the grudge match have been mentioned, including Pharrell “Happy” Williams, Bobby “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” McFerrin, Happy Traum, Happy Rhodes and Happy the Man. No comment yet from Donna “Happiest Girl in the Whole USA” Fargo…
