The Miguel Zenon Quartet dazzled the close to capacity crowd at the Falcon in Marlboro last month by debuting compositions from their upcoming, as-yet-untitled new CD. Led by alto saxophonist extraordinaire Miguel Zenon, the band played through a set of joyful, uplifting compositions including titles such as “Academia” and “Sangre de la Sangre.” Also featured was a composition by pianist Guillermo Klein, who was in the audience. All virtuosos in their own right, Zenon’s bandmates – Hans Glaschwig on bass, Louis Perdomo on piano and Henry Cole on drums – were given plenty of room to stretch out and breathe during the set.
Opening up the evening was the Anderson Brothers, a rhythm section-less trio consisting of Will Anderson on clarinet and Peter Anderson on alto sax with non-brother Alex Wentz on guitar. They brought new life to old standards ranging from Cole Porter’s “It’s All Right with Me” and Hoagy Carmichael’s classic “Georgia on My Mind.”
