Merle Haggard died today (Wednesday, April 6) on his 79th birthday. He hadn’t been doing so well in recent months, and the country music great had been in and out of the hospital since December when he was diagnosed with double pneumonia. He’d been forced to postpone or cancel nearly all of his scheduled concerts since then, and just last week, he canceled all of his April tour dates. In a statement issued by his publicist said, “I want to thank my fans for their prayers and well wishes. I hope to be back on the road in May, but I’m taking it one day at a time.”

Several weeks ago, Local 518 songwriter multi-instrumentalist Michael Eck decided to do something to honor the Hag while he was still with us, teaming up with the Ale House’s Brian Gilchrist to present a concert paying tribute to the Hag and his massive contributions to American music.

“Let’s sing his songs, and his praises, while he’s here,” Eck said at the time. Unfortunately, Haggard died on Wednesday, just a few days before the tribute concert.

The concert – “Down Every Road: Songs of Merle Haggard” – will feature the cream of Greater Nippertown’s alt-country/Americana music crop singing Haggard’s country classics (and lesser known nuggets) at the Hangar on the Hudson in Troy on Sunday evening (April 10). The concert is a benefit for SongwritingWith:Soldiers, a national organization that pairs service members with professional songwriters to craft songs about their experiences, tell their stories, rebuild trust, release pain and help forge new bonds. GO HERE to purchase advance tickets online; tickets will be available at the door.

Among the many performers scheduled to dip into Hag’s rich songbag on are Jim Gaudet & the Railroad Boys, Tim Wechgalaer, Ramblin Jug Stompers, Caroline MotherJudge, Big Frank & the Bargain Bingers, Red Haired Strangers, the Lazy Suns, Lonesome Val & Todd Nelson, the Coveralls, Mike McMann & Peggy LeCuyer and host Michael Eck.
