The Brooklyn-based old-timey trio The Down Hill Strugglers returned to Greater Nippertown last week for a concert at The Linda in Albany to celebrate the rich legacy of folk music collected by Alan Lomax. As it turned out, the Strugglers were playing short-handed, as banjo player Eli Smith was ill and unable to perform. Nonetheless, fiddler Jackson Lynch and guitarist Walker Shepard carried on as a duo, and in truth, they weren’t exactly all alone, as the evening’s concert progressed in round-robin fashion with support from Meredith Axelrod, the Four O’Clock Flowers (the duo of Samoa Wilson and Ernie Vega) and host Michael Eck.

In truth, the concert – which was broadcast live on WAMC-FM – was something of a preview for the three-day Brooklyn Folk Festival this weekend at St. Ann’s Church.
