When O.A.R. rolled into Albany’s Palace Theatre last week, they allowed the fans do most of the set list selection via pre-concert online voting.

And, of course, the band – drummer Chris Culos, lead singer Marc Roberge, guitarist Richard On, bassist Benj Gershman and sax man Jerry DePizzo – were pretty much obligated to play “Black Rock” (early in the show) and “That Was a Crazy Game of Poker” (the final encore), both crowd favorites from the band’s 1997 debut album, The Wanderer.

And then there was the oddball brace of covers – the unlikely pair of Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up” and Billy Joel’s “The Downeaster ‘Alexa’.”

The Hunts – a squadron of seven young brothers and sisters (Jessi, Jenni, Josh, Jonathan, Jordan, Justin and Jamison Hunt) from Virginia – served up an opening set of pleasing, ready-for-PBS indie-folk laced with sibling harmonies and culled from their recently released debut album, Those Younger Days.

SECOND OPINIONS:
Excerpt from Kirsten Ferguson’s review at The Daily Gazette: “Even after 20 years of touring and mainstream success, O.A.R.’s college roots still show in their music — a blend of emo-pop and the sort of watered down reggae-funk that goes well with frat parties and cheap beer. It’s a formula that O.A.R. has been refining for decades, and they had more than enough hook- filled tunes — paired with a feel-good communal vibe — to keep the Palace Theatre crowd on their feet throughout the band’s two-hour performance Thursday night. While there were lots of college-age fans at the Palace — along with enthusiastic screaming, occasional rowdiness and spilled beer — there were plenty of older fans in the almost-full theatre as well.”
