Jazz drummer-composer Joe Barna and his band Sketches of Influence are headed into the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy this weekend to record a live album, Ivory Romance.

The centerpiece of the album is “Suite Lee,” which Barna composed as a tribute to jazz pianist Lee Shaw, who died in October at the age of 89.

“Because of the generosity KickStarter donors have each offered, this music will receive a proper documentation at the Sanctuary for Independent Media,” says Barna. “It’s to honor a very special friend and fellow musician Lee Shaw… she brought a light into this world that few will ever match. The beauty she left behind, coupled with her legacy that lives on through the students she inspired will last for eternity.”

Barna and his band – alto saxman Adam Siegel, pianist Nick Hetko and bassist John Menegon – will perform the concert twice this weekend, at 7pm on Saturday (January 9) and 6pm on Sunday (January 10).

Admission to the concerts is free for the project’s Kickstarter donors; $10 minimum donation for the general public.
