COMIN’ SOON: New Concert Announcements

Two guitar greats – the twentysomething Ryley Walker from Chicago and the 74-year-old Brit Michael Chapman – team up for an evening of mindbending musical magic and fabulous fretboard fireworks at the Low Beat in Albany at 7:30pm on Monday, October 12. Tickets are $10 in advance.

The folks at the City of Albany’s Office of Special Events deserves major kudos for bringing the high-flying jazz combination of the Bad Plus and Joshua Redman to town this summer, but the Alive at Five show at Jennings Landing proved to be the wrong venue, marred by a crowd that was too noisey, too inattentive. Fortunately, the folks at Skidmore College are bringing the Bad Plus Joshua Redman back for a concert at the Saratoga Springs campus’ Zankel Music Center at 8pm on Friday, October 23. Tickets go on sale at 9am on Wednesday, September 9, priced at $35.

British band Circa Waves roll into the Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park at 8pm on Friday, October 2, for a free concert presented by WEQX-FM. Other new shows at UCH include Canadian hard-rockers Theory of a Dead Man with We Are Harlot and Aranda at 8pm on Sunday, October 25 ($20 in advance; $23 at the door) and the Acacia Strain’s Tune Low Die Slow Tour with Counterparts, Glass Cloud, Fit for an Autopsy and Kublai Khan at 7pm on Tuesday, December 8 ($15 in advance; $18 at the door; on sale on Friday).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Buddy Guy is slated to make a tour stop at The Egg’s Hart Theatre in support of his new album, Born to Play Guitar. Priced at $49, $59 & $79, tickets go sale to the general public on Friday (September 4).

The Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill plays host to the Third Ear – a boundary-stretching jazz trio with a world music perspective, featuring reed player Michael Moss, bassist-poet Larry Roland and multi-guitarist Gabriel Abularach – at 7:30pm on Saturday, September 19. Tickets are $15; $10 students & seniors.

Led by Stephan Jenkins, San Francisco-based rockers Third Eye Blind (“Semi-Charmed Life,” “Jumper”) land onstage at Northampton’s Calvin Theatre on Monday, October 12. Priced at $31, tickets go on sale on Friday (September 4).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: A Place for Jazz has announced its fall concert season at the Whisperdome at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Schenectady, and it includes concerts by Rene Marie, the Theo Hill Quartet, Manuel Valera & the New Cuban Express, the John Nazarenko Trio and the Chris Potter Quartet.

Dave Mason’s Traffic Jam is headed into the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock at 8pm on Thursday, October 8. Priced at $25, $45 & $55, tickets went on sale today (Wednesday, September 2).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Garage in Pittsfield announced the new Laugh Lounge series for the fall featuring performances by up-and-coming stand-up comedians Sean Donnelly, Brooke Van Poppelen and Kevin McCaffrey.

The doors at Vapor in Saratoga Springs open at 7pm on Thursday, October 1 for a concert by country singer Jana Kramer. Tickets are $20. In addition, WEQX-FM is presenting two free concerts at Vapor next month – Coleman Hell on Wednesday, October 21 and the return of Locksley on Saturday, October 24.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Veteran jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan and bassist Cameron Brown team up once again to headline a concert titled “The Art of the Duo” at the Old Dutch Church in Kingston. opening the evening will be the tandems of Su Terry & Peggy Stern and Teri Roiger & John Menegon.

Michael Farkas, Teddy Weber and “Sauerkraut” Seth Travins – collectively known as the wonderful Wiyos are headed back to Club Helsinki in Hudson at 9pm on Friday, October 2. Tickets are $15 in advance; $18 at the door.

Lafayette, Louisiana alt-popsters GIVERS bounce into the spotlight at Pearl Street in Northampton at 8pm on Wednesday, November 18, with Doe Paoro opening the show. Priced at $15, tickets went on sale today (Wednesday, September 2).

In addition to her previously announced performance at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield on Saturday, September 26, stand-up comedian Paula Poundstone will also be making a tour stop at the Wood Theater in Glens Falls at 8pm on Friday, February 26. Tickets for the Glens Falls show are $59.50.

SOLD OUT: The Loreena McKennitt Trio concert slated for The Egg in Albany on Friday, October 16 is now officially sold out.

He’s been a regular performer at the Food for Thought film series, but at 8pm on Saturday, October 17, Jack Empie & Friends will have the evening all to themselves at The Linda in Albany. Tickets are $10. Also at The Linda, Andrea Gibson – poet, spoken-word queen and the winner of the first Women’s World Poetry Slam – grabs the microphone at 8pm on Friday, October 23. Tickets are $14 in advance; $17 at the door.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield announced new concerts by the New Christy Minstrels, the Weight and the Van Morrison tribute band Moondance.

In addition to his previously announced concert at The Egg in Albany at 8pm on Saturday, October 24, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Art Garfunkel will also be making a tour stop at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington at 8pm on Saturday, November 14. Tickets at the Mahaiwe are $74 & $84.

Canadian band Jubilee Riots (formerly Enter the Haggis) brings their Celtic-tinged roots rock to Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs at 9pm on Friday, November 6. Tickets are $15. Also newly announced for Putnam Den are Max Creek with Half Step at 9:30pm on Saturday, September 26 ($12 in advance; $15 at the door).

CANCELLED: The Caravan of Thieves concert originally scheduled for 7pm on Sunday, September 20 at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs has been cancelled.

CANCELLED: The concert by Julian Casablancas + the Voidz with Craft Spells, which was originally slated for Pearl Street in Northampton at 8:30pm on Tuesday, October 13, has been cancelled.

CANCELLED & RELOCATED: The bad news… The concert by theNEWDEAL, which was originally slated for the Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park at 9pm on Thursday, October 29, has been cancelled. Ticket refunds are available at the place of purchase. The good news… theNEWDEAL will take the stage at Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs at 9pm on Sunday, November 8. Tickets are $20 in advance; $25 at the door.

OPENERS: Simi Stone has been added as the opening act for the Antlers at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock on Saturday (September 5)… Darren Jessee (of Hotel Lights and the Ben Folds Five) opens for U.S. Elevator at Club Helsinki in Hudson on Saturday, September 12… At The Linda in Albany, Chuck Cannon opens for Antje Duvekot on Friday, September 18; Olivia Quillio has snagged the opening slot for Charlie Mars on Friday, September 25; and Brian Dunne will warm up for Bobby Long on Saturday, September 26.

    i happen to stumble into Dave and Phil Alvin and The Guilty Ones playing the Hallow on October 28th. I dont think ive seen that mentioned here yet. ALso Fishbone coming up there too.
