1. THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER BOUGHT WASThe Temptations’ Greatest Hits (best guess). My folks ran a record store from the time I was 4 years old, so I didn’t really buy much. But I brought many records home to listen and listened in the store in listening booths. At home, we had a collection of 78RPM Jazz Classics, so I listened to the whole spectrum of jazz in my home from an early age. I remember hearing a lot of Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Belafonte, music from India, the mountains of Chile…

R&B/Motown, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Platters, Lee Morgan, Bill Evans were among the records I remember owning from an early age. Many 45s – “Get On Up,” “The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game,” “You’ll Never Get to Heaven if You Break My Heart,” “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” Buffalo Springfield…

Pianist-composer Michele Rosewoman leads her band New Yor-Uba into The Egg’s Swyer Theatre in Albany for the Latin jazz concert, New Yor-Uba: A Musical Celebration of Cuba in America. In addition to Rosewoman, the band features trumpeter Alex Norris, saxophonists Roman Filiu, Aaron Djuan Burnett and Andrew Gutauskas, trombonist Chris Washburne, bassist Gregg August, drummer Tyshawn Sorey, percussionists Roman Diaz, Abraham Rodriguez and Mauricio Herrera and lead vocalist Ernesto “El Gato” Gatell. The concert takes place at 8pm on Saturday (March 21), and tickets are $28.
