EVENT: The New York State Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Memorial Observance @ the Empire State Plaza Convention Center, Albany. With featured speaker Suzan Johnson Cook (author and former U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom) and featured performers CeCe Peniston and the Capital District Community Voices of Praise under the direction of Dennis Edney. 9:30-11:30am.

EVENT: Martin Luther King Jr. Labor Celebration @ Hackett Middle School, Albany. Keynote speaker Colia Clark is joined by musicmakers Taina Asili & Gaetano Vaccaro and others in this family-friendly community celebration to honor the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 12noon-3:30pm. FREE.

MUSIC: Joe Bonamassa @ the Palace Theatre, Albany. As a young teen, the Utica guitarslinger regularly played Nippertown joints like Pauly’s Hotel and Bogie’s. Now the Grammy nominated blues-rocker is returning to the Palace, and there are only a few seats left. 8pm. $82, $99 & $128.

MUSIC: Sean Rowe @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. Troy singer-songwriter with the booming bass-baritone delivers a hometown show at the Caffe in support of Madman, which was named to more than a few Best of the Year lists. With opener Anthony Prezio, who happens to be Sean Rowe’s uncle. 3pm. $27. UPDATE: This show is officially sold out.

MUSIC: Joe Gorman @ the Lion’s Den at the Red Lion Inn, Stockbridge. Formerly with the ’80s popsters Ariel and currently a member of Band of Gold, Gorman goes it alone for a solo show. 8pm. FREE.

EVENT: Lefty’s Lounge @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. Guest bartender Kat Dunn celebrates the anniversary of our country going “dry” by mixing up Prohibition-style cocktails in Helsinki’s Ballroom. In true lounge form, Tony Kieraldo will tickle the ivories for your listening pleasure. 6:30pm.

FILM: “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” @ Proctors, Schenectady. James Stewart stars in the Frank Capra film as a naive man who is appointed to fill a vacancy in the US Senate. His plans promptly collide with political corruption, but he doesn’t back down. 2:30, 5 & 7:30pm. $5.
