Musicians can find a little piece of heaven tucked in a studio in Windham. There, Gerhards Guitarworks offers everything from handcrafted guitars to strings and drumsticks.
Robert “Cue” and Alana Gerhards moved from Poughkeepsie a year ago with a handful of staff specializing in finishing and refinishing all forms of acoustic and electric stringed instruments, in addition to offering such tech services as set-ups, repairs, neck resets and bridgework. They also keep a complete line of retail products on hand.
Alana’s talents in graphic design mix with Cue’s experience as a long-time luthier, while they both bring musicianship and a love of woodworking to their craft.
“I was amazed long ago by those four lads from England like so many others,” explains Cue. “I learned to play and began building guitars. I worked for a company, and then ended up having a shop in my basement. We started growing. Now we specialize in using native woods and taking in all of the design specifics to make a guitar sound as someone wants. We have refurbished and refinished many older instruments, so that they can be played and loved again.”
The crew is a dedicated group of artists.
“It is so much more than a job,” says Alana. Hour and hours sanding and then painting, and then sanding again. It is time consuming and meticulous work. In the end, there is a product we are all proud of.”
In the months ahead, they hope to show more folks through their showroom to see the guitar-making process. They also hope to introduce some guitar-making workshops.
Gerhards Guitarworks is one of the sponsors of the Pro Jam #7 at Club Helsinki in Hudson at 8pm Thursday (Augsut 14), where they will have displays and be available for questions and ideas.
