Based on Theodore Dreiser’s novel and inspired by a sensational murder trial in Herkimer, Tobias Picker’s opera explores a small-town boy’s pursuit of his idealized dreams. CABARET: “Here Come the Callaways” @ Barrington Stage Company, Pittsfield. Tony-nominated sisters Liz Callaway and Ann Hampton Callaway headline in a show ignited with unforgettable songs from Broadway, pop, and jazz. 8pm. $60.
THEATER: “Onstage @ the Clark” @ the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown. Directed by Danny Sharron, actors Tom Nelis and Ryan Melia present an excerpt from John Logan’s Tony Award-winning play “Red,” about abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko. Rothko’s iconic “No. 1” is currently on view in the Clark’s exhibition “Make It New: Abstract Painting from the National Gallery of Art, 1950-1975,” through October 13. 5pm.
