Based on Theodore Dreiser’s novel and inspired by a sensational murder trial in Herkimer, Tobias Picker’s opera explores a small-town boy’s pursuit of his idealized dreams. MUSIC/CIRCUS: Philadelphia Orchestra @ SPAC, Saratoga Springs. Back by popular demand, Cirque de la Symphonie returns to match the music to a variety of circus skills. The program includes “Carnival Overture, Opus 92,” “Spanish Dance” from La Vida Breve, “Ritual Fire Dance” from El Amor Brujo, “Flight to Neverland” from Hook and “Danse des Bouffons” from The Snow Maiden with aerial duo Alexander Streltsov & Christine Van Loo; mime and juggler Vladimir Tsarkov; as well as contortionists, dancers, strongmen and high-wire acts of stunning virtuosity on the stage and up in the air.
