Festival Fever: SaratogaArtsFest, 6/11-15/14

The SaratogaArtsFest – a five-day festival that runs from Wednesday-Sunday (June 11-15) at a variety of venues throughout the city – is a collaboration and celebration of more than 40 community arts organizations, designed to appeal to a wide audience, from the serious arts aficionado to families with young children. The festival offers activities and events, showcasing music, dance, visual art, film, theater and literary art.

Tickets for the fest are a bit complicated to explain. You can purchase an ARTSPASS for $40. For many of the fest’s events the ARTSPASS will get you in free, while at other events the ARTSPASS will allow you to purchase tickets at a discounted price. Still other events that are part of the SaratogaArtsFest are FREE for everyone – even without an ARTSPASS.

THURSDAY (JUNE 12)
Martha Graham Dance Company @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center: Two iconic Martha Graham works (“Appalachian Spring” and “The Rite of Spring”) will be performed, along with a new, “Echo.” (7:30pm)

FRIDAY (JUNE 13)
Duncan Sheik @ Skidmore College’s Zankel Music Center: The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter performs music from his solo catalog and forthcoming album, as well as music from his hit theatrical productions, “Spring Awakening” and “American Psycho.” The performance will feature a string quartet and guest vocalist, as well as band members Doug Yowell and Jason Hart. (8pm)

“Sol LwWitt” @ Saratoga Arts: A screening of the documentary film about the artist, followed by a discussion with Susan Cross, the curator of visual arts at MASS MoCA. (7:30pm)

SATURDAY (JUNE 14)
Saratoga Shakespeare Company presents “Shakespeare: The Remix” @ Universal Preservation Hall: Performed by two actors, a hip-hop-loving high school girl on the verge of dropping out meets Shakespeare, and a pitched battle of wits erupts. (3pm)

Home Made Theater presents “Theatrical Therapy: A Cabaret Performance” @ Universal Preservation Hall. Find out what happened to your favorite musical theater characters after the final curtain. This original piece is filled with laughter and song. (5pm)

No. 11 Productions presents “Coosje” @ Universal Preservation Hall: In this whimsical love story two sculptors learn to collaborate in life and art. Meanwhile, a pear falls out of a fruit bowl, gains consciousness, and travels the world. (8pm)

SUNDAY (JUNE 15)
Panel Discussion: “Sport as Art” @ Skidmore College’s Zankel Music Center: Former professional athletes and professionals in the field of collegiate sports will discuss the concept of sport as an art form. The session will be led by Skidmore professor Jeffrey Segrave, a noted expert on the Olympic Games and the role of sport in society. (11am)

“Spirit of Life: 150(1) Years of Words, Music and Dance” @ Skidmore College’s Janet Kinghorn Bernhard Theater: Choreographer Mary Harney and composer Elizabeth Woodbury Kasius join forces to present original choreography and music, performed live by the world jazz group Heard and Skidmore dance and theater students. (1:15pm)

“Fame High” @ Saratoga Arts: From Academy Award nominee Scott Hamilton Kennedy comes a documentary film exploring the trials and tribulations of talented teens as they reach for their dreams of becoming actors, singers, dancers and musicians. Followed by a discussion with the director. (2pm)
