A fast-rising star from Mali, guitarist-singer-songwriter Oumar Konate served up a marvelous evening of contemporary West African music last week when he made his Nippertown concert debut at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy.
Touring in support of his first international album, Addoh, Konate and his bandmates – bassist Cheick Siriman Sissoko and drummer-percussionist Makan Camara – kept the rhythms percolating, the melodies soaring and the message loud and clear for peace and better days in Mali and all around the globe.
A versatile player who is equally talented on both acoustic and electric guitar, Konate’s fretsmanship was nothing short of astounding. As the kids say these days, he shreds.
