2/23/14: Today’s Tips: Sunday

MUSIC: Band of Horses @ The Egg, Albany. Presented by WeQX-FM, it’s a special acoustic performance by the band in support of their brand new album, Acoustic at the Ryman, recorded live in concert in Nashville. 8pm. $30. UPDATE: This show is officially sold out.

MUSIC: Freedy Johnston @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. By time he released his sophomore album, Rolling Stone and Spin were calling him one of America’s finest new songwriters, and just last year that album, Can You Fly, was included in “1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die” by music critic Tom Moon. After four albums on Elektra, produced by T Bone Burnett, and a radio hit with ”Bad Reputation,” Johnston re-emerged in 2010 with one of the best albums of his career, Rain On the City. 7pm. $20.

MUSIC: Noam Pikelny & Friends @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. An evening with an all-star array of pickers: Noam Pikelny (banjo), Bryan Sutton (guitar), Luke Bulla (fiddle), Barry Bales (bass) and Jesse Cobb (mandolin) runs the gamut from traditional bluegrass to Bill Monroe classics to free-wheeling original neuvo-acoustic music. And don’t be surprised if Aoife O’Donovan sticks around after her Saturday night concert, to sit in with the boys tonight. 8pm. $20.

MUSIC: Veena & Devesh Chandra @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. The mother and son North Indian classical music duo will dazzle you with their exquisite sitar and tabla playing. 2pm. $16.

MUSIC: The Wood Brothers @ The Egg, Albany. Siblings Chris (bassist of Medeski Martin & Wood) and guitarist-vocalist Oliver lead the band in their return to The Egg in support of their latest album, The Muse, produced by Buddy Miller. MUSIC: Kristian Bezuidenhout @ EMPAC at RPI, Troy. The acclaimed fortepianist brings a new dimension to the interpretation of Mozart’s piano music. His solo performance will include music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. 4pm. $18; $13 seniors; $6 students.

THEATER: “Sister Act” @ Proctors, Schenectady. After witnessing a murder, a disco diva is hidden away in a convent for her own protection. Hijinx ensue, and soon she’s a nun on the run. The 2011 Tony-nominated musical is based on the 1992 film. 2pm. $20-$75.

THEATER ON FILM: “Coriolanus” @ Spectrum 8 Theatres, Albany. As part of the National Theatre Live series, Josie Rourke directs Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge, with Tom Hiddleston in the title role. 12noon. $15; $12 for ages 12 and under. Also 7pm on Monday.

MUSIC: Cyrille Aimee & the Guitar Heroes @ the Falcon, Marlboro. The vocal stylist fuses the driving force of Dominican rhythm with the swing of the French Gypsies. 7pm. Donations encouraged.

MUSIC: Kelly Joe Phelps @ the Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton. An extraordinary blues player infused with the spirit of soulful jazz, folk and gospel. In support of his latest album, Brother Sinner & the Whale. 7pm. $18. GO HERE for more info…
