If the name Steve Shook evokes some kind of half-buried memory, but you just can’t quite place it, relax – you’ve got a lot on your mind! But see if this rings any bells… In the ’70s, he was part of Travis Shook & the Club Wow, who regularly opened for comedian George Carlin.
Shook teamed up with his old sparring partner Chandler Travis (inviting him and his Three-O: Fred Boak, John Clark and Berke McKelvey) onstage at Caffe Lena earlier this month to celebrate the release of his first solo CD, Dignify, and fittingly (?) hauled out the novelty Christmas tune “Mistletoe and Holly.”
You already know that Chandler Travis leads his multiple musical entourages with a glorious blend of wry, madcap, gleeful jubilation – but with a component of pure sincerity that’s never far below the surface. There’s not that much distance from satire to heart-wrenching honesty, and the vulnerable, beautiful people like Chandler, Steve and their collaborators remind us that the best of human nature is in its dreams – in the ability to leave this world for a while, and to take an audience with them – if only for the duration of a three-minute song.
Chandler Travis has put together his Christmas 2013 mix tape featuring holiday gems from Nick Lowe, Jackie & Roy, the Real Tuesday Weld, Ernie Kovacs, Nippertown ex-pat John Powhida International Airport and lots more. GO HERE for a FREE download…
