Sonny Rollins’ Documentary to Kick Off Woodstock Film Festival on Wednesday

The 2013 Woodstock Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday (October 2) with a screening of “Sonny Rollins: Beyond the Notes” at the Woodstock Playhouse, and the legendary jazz saxophonist himself will be on hand to participate in a post-screening Q&A along with filmmaker Dick Fontaine.

Fontaine’s documentary takes audiences on a 78-minute jazz journey focused on Rollins’ 80th birthday concert at the Beacon Theatre in NYC, where Rollins was joined by such other jazz greats as Ornette Coleman, Jim Hall and Roy Haynes.

Following the Q&A, the JD Allen Trio will celebrate the jazz legend with a live performance.

Tickets are $40 & $50.

There will also be an additional screening of the film at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck at 7pm on Thursday (October 3). Tickets are $10.

The Woodstock Film Festival runs from Wednesday through Sunday at various locations in and around Woodstock.
