Festival Fever: Basilica SoundScape @ Basilica Hudson

Last year, Basilica Hudson in Hudson – the artist-owned venue run by creative directors Melissa Auf der Maur (formerly of Hole and Smashing Pumpkins) and filmmaker Tony Stone – teamed up with Pitchfork to launch its inaugural music festival at the waterfront arts and performance space located inside a reclaimed 19th-century factory. The festival, now named Basilica SoundScape, returns this weekend, September 13 & 14.

Organized by Basilica Hudson with Pitchfork editor Brandon Stosuy and Brian DeRan (Gleam House, Leg UP!), Basilica SoundScape is a carefully curated weekend featuring a wide range of music, visual art and literature. It aims for specific connections and overlaps instead of “festival”-style overload.

The fest’s musical offerings run the full sonic spectrum from the ethereal aural wash of Julianna Barwick to the face-melting metal/hardcore of Pig Destroyer to African kora master Malang Djobate.

And it’s not all music, either. Punk pioneer Richard Hell will be reading from his recently published autobiography, “I Dreamed I Was a Very Clean Tramp.” Visual artist Lionel Maunz will construct a large sculpture (cast concrete, pewter, iron, grains, sulfur and semen) in the main performance area, which will stay up all weekend. It will coincide with a large-scale sound piece produced collaboratively by Stosuy, artist/filmmaker Matthew Barney and composer Jonathan Bepler.

The fest will conclude both nights with an after-party at the nearby Half Moon, beginning at 1am. Advance tickets for Basilica SoundScape are $60 for the weekend; $35 for single-day tickets. Overnight camping is also available.

Here’s the schedule of performances at Basilica SoundScape this weekend:
