Downtown Albany JazzFest Competition Winner Announced

The jazz was jumpin’…

The third annual Downtown Albany JazzFest Competition took place on Friday evening (September 6), as ten different downtown venues each hosted a free, four-hour jazz band performance. Music fans were invited to tour the various venues and vote for their favorite band.

The winner – determined by audience voting (50%) and independent judge Darrin Kibbey, the general manager of Siena College radio station WVCR 88.3FM The Saint (50%) – was the Jake Pinto Trio, who performed at the Hollow Bar + Kitchen.

“The Jake Pinto Trio was tight on both their covers and originals, finding unique ways to work the room with their amazing talent,” said Kibbey. “They even cleverly threw a turtle shell into the mix.”

Led by 23-year-old pianist Pinto, the band will play the opening set of the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival at Jennings Landing at 1pm today (Saturday, September 7). Also performing at the festival will be Sensemaya (2:15pm), the Arch Stanton Quartet (3:45pm), Charlie Hunter (5:15pm) and Oleta Adams (7pm), followed by a fireworks display. Admission is free.
