FESTIVAL/MUSIC: Festival in the Desert: Caravan for Peace @ Freedom Square, Troy. The traveling edition of Mali’s award-winning “Festival in the Desert” featuring two of Africa’s most powerful musical groups. Tartit/Imharhan will transform from a very traditional mixed female/male ensemble to a band that reflects the often experimental, fascinating Tuareg adaptation of Saharan nomad music to contemporary, fresh sounds. And Mamadou Kelly – who made a name for himself by playing with greats like the late Malian blues legend Ali Farka Toure – will bring his virtuosic acoustic guitar playing, his encyclopedic knowledge of Malian music and his soulful, bluesy voice. 5:30pm. MUSIC: Leon Russell @ The Egg, Albany. From “Shindig” to Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs & Englishmen, from Hank Wilson to his recent collaboration with Elton John, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and piano-pounding singer-songwriter has had a long and varied musical career.
