Festival Fever: Freedom Festival @ Freedom Square, 6/15/13

The River Street Festival isn’t the only free outdoor musical celebration going on in Troy on Saturday (June 15). The fine folks at the Sanctuary for Independent Media are also presenting the inaugural Freedom Festival at Freedom Square (next door to the Media Sanctuary) from 3-8pm on Saturday.

The fest celebrates Juneteenth and the Emancipation Movement, as well as the christening of the brand new Freedom Square stage, which has been in development as part of the year-long Found Art in North Troy project. The stage features a massive mosaic by acclaimed Philadelphia muralist Isaiah Zagar with the help of hundreds of local community volunteers over the course of the past several months and recently completed during a two-day workshop with Zagar. And it looks great!

The festival – which wraps up the Sanctuary’s spring season of events – features food, family-friendly activities and, of course, some groove-a-licious music.

The musical headliners for the fest will be M.A.K.U. Sound System and Local 518 favorites Taina Asili y la Bande Rebelde.

A NYC-based eight-piece band, M.A.K.U Sound System plays Colombian music that is traditional at its core, but with a distinctively futuristic spin, incorporating synthesizers and an array of more modern musical influences including jazz, psychedelic rock, punk, Afro-beat, reggae and soul.

Based in Albany, soulful vocalist Taina Asili and her band la Banda Rebelde pump out an energetic fusion of Afro-Latin, reggae and rock sounds, representing the global diversity of the bandmembers.

At Freedom Square, there is plenty of room for dancing, lawn blankets and chairs. The rain site for the fest is the Sanctuary for Independent Media. And if you just can’t make it out to Troy’s Freedom Square, you can still enjoy the festivities via a live webcast on Sanctuary TV.

Here’s the full schedule for the inaugural Freedom Festival:

3pm: Troy Bike Rescue’s bike clinic and bike schwag art workshop
4pm: Community potluck and inauguration of Freedom Square
5pm: Taina Asili y la Bande Rebelde
6:30pm: M.A.K.U. Sound System
