Ah, those tribute bands just keep on coming…
In fact, on Saturday night (March 16), three – count ’em, three – tribute bands are all headed into town, including the Beach Party Boys at Glen Falls’ Wood Theater and the Dead Show at Pauly’s Hotel.
But at the top of the heap is Start Making Sense, a Talking Heads tribute band based in Bethlehem, PA. Led by vocalist-guitarist Jon Braun (in the role of David Byrne), the band made their area debut in 2010 at the Bella Terra Festival, and have since delivered knock-out performances at such venues as Jillian’s and Troy’s Rockin’ On the River.
The band isn’t one of those hey-we’re-pretending-to-be-the-Talking Heads tribute acts. In fact, they’re much more like a hey-isn’t-the-Talking Heads’-music-great-and-aren’t-we-all-having-fun kind of band.
Braun certainly does a fine job as the quirky frontman, but the real secret to the Heads’ music is in the groove – a wide and varied rhythmic approach that continually shifted throughout the Heads’ musical career. Start Making Sense navigate the eclectic rhythms with a natural ease, digging a deliciously deep groove – whether pumping out the jittery, minimalist new wave of “Psycho Killer,” the percolating African-influenced rhythms of “The Great Curve” or the litling “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody).”
Start Making Sense returns to the Capital Region on Saturday (March 16), playing a show at Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs. Doors open at 8pm, and the Great White Caps open the show at 9:30pm. Tickets are $12 in advance; $15 at the door; $20 for ages 18-21.
