1/28/13: Today’s Tips: Monday

READING: “Poets Speak Loud” @ McGeary’s Pub, Albany. The poetry open mic night celebrates its eighth anniversary. The event will also commemorate Tom Nattell, local poet and community activist, who died the same day the poetry open mic began, January 31, 2005. Tom had been scheduled to be the first featured reader at the new series, but died of cancer earlier that day. The open mic was held that night and was a celebration of his life, work and performances. Tonight’s event will begin with the annual Tom Nattell Beret Toss at 6pm at the Robert Burns statue in Washington Park. Open mic sign-up at 7pm; readings at 7:30pm.

FILM: “The Graduate” @ the Palace Theatre, Albany. 7pm. $5; children $3.

THEATER: “The Pillowman” @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. Channel Z Theater presents Martin McDonagh’s bold, dark comedy about a hapless writer living in a police state who is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a number of bizarre child murders occurring in his town. Directed by Irma Zehr. 7:30pm. $15; students & seniors $12. Through Tuesday, February 5.

BURLESQUE: Bing Bamboo Room Burlesque @ the Bayou Cafe, Albany. Starring emcee Guy Smiley and the glamorous the Bing Bamboo Room Gang. 8pm. $10.

FILM: “A Night at the Opera” @ Proctors, Schenectady. The Marx Brothers’ 1935 classic comedy is screened on the Mainstage. 2:30, 5 & 7:30pm. $5.
