THE TOP 40 CONCERTS OF THE YEAR

2012 was a fantastic year for live music with The Egg leading the way and another great batch of free shows from late spring til the summer’s end.

1. Global Citizen Fest in Central Park, New York City, 9/29. Thanks to my friend Mike (who scored two free tickets through the lottery maze), I got to see Neil Young & Crazy Horse, the Black Keys, Foo Fighters, Band of Horses and K’naan. Unannounced John Legend played one song solo – John Lennon’s “Imagine” with most of the 60,000 people singing along, the emotional high of the day. Neil’s closing anthem “Rockin’ in the Free World” was orgasmic with all the players returning – Dave Grohl and Dan Auerbach helping to take the crowd higher with the inspiring ecological message of the day blending with great music.

2. Freihofer Saratoga Jazz Festival @ SPAC, Saratoga Springs, 6/30 & 7/1. The two-day fest has a big advantage – over 20 acts usually leading to a few discoveries. Highlights included Trio of Oz, Hiromi Trio Project, Edmar Castanada, Maceo Parker, Catherine Russell, Chris Botti and Hailey Niswinger.

3. Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 @ Club Helsinki, Hudson, 4/7

4. Roger Waters’ “The Wall” @ the Times Union Center, Albany, 6/28

5. J.B. Scott’s Reunion @ Michael’s Banquet House, Latham, 5/5. Many good bands, but Fear of Strangers/the Units transcended it all.

6. Matthew Sweet @ The Egg, Albany, 6/22

7. Psychedelic Furs @ The Egg, Albany, 6/2

8. Stephane Wrembel @ The Egg, Albany, 1/26

9. Chick Corea & Gary Burton @ Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, Troy, 10/17
