10/7/12: Today’s Tips: Sunday

MUSIC: The Robert Glasper Experiment @ The Egg, Albany. Pianist and composer Robert Glasper boldly stakes out new musical territory that fuses together hip-hop and jazz with his band that features Casey Benjamin on vocoder and saxophone, Derrick Hodge on electric bass and Chris Dave on drums. 7:30pm. $24.

MUSIC: Sultans of String Duo @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. Canadian raucous roots string wizards Chris McKhool (violin) and Kevin Laliberté (guitar) shake things up with their new, and aptly titled CD, MOVE! 7pm. $20.

FESTIVAL: ChowderFest @ Riverfront Park, Troy. With Rich Ortiz, the Standard Clams, the Hi-Flyers and of course lots o’ chowder. 10am. Rain or shine. FREE.

MUSIC: Disposable Rocket Band @ Putnam Den, Saratoga Springs. Extraterrestrial prog-rock/dance party madness from Captain Kane and his crew. With the Lucky Jukebox Brigade, Mr Owl and Sun Burdens. 9pm. $5.

THEATER ON FILM: “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night” @ Time + Space Limited, Hudson. A production of the National Theatre of London, based on Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel. 15-year-old Christopher stands beside Mrs. Shears’ dead dog, Wellington. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight, and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in his book to solve the mystery. He has an extraordinary brain, exceptional at math but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and he distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world. 1pm. $22; students $15.

FILM: “Detropia” @ Time + Space Limited, Hudson. This new film by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady is a cinematic tapestry that chronicles the lives of several Detroiters trying to survive and make sense of what is happening to their city in the midst of the collapse of the economy and the fading American mythos. 6:30pm. $7; students $5.

DANCE ON FILM: “La Sylphide” @ Proctors, Schenectady. Performed by the Bolshoi Ballet. 2pm. $15; ages 17 & under $ 10. Also at 2 & 7pm on Tuesday (October 9).

FESTIVAL/FILM: The 5th International (Occasional) Spotty Dog Short Film Festival @ the Spotty Dog, Hudson. No judges, no prizes – just an eclectic assortment of short films and videos from artists and filmmakers, many of whom will be on hand to introduce their movies. 7pm.

BURLESQUE: Guy Smiley’s Big Gay Burlesque Show @ Rocks, Albany. Over the top acts from NYC and Albany. Doors open at 8pm; showtime is 9pm. $5; VIP $10.
