While there are a whole lot of bands out there who lay claim to international world music influences, Rupa & the April Fishes most definitely walk it like they talk it.
The band’s 2008 debut album, EXtraOrdinary rendition, was sung primarily in French by lead vocalist Rupa Marya and her global gang of musicians. A year later, their sophomore album Este mundo was sung mostly in Spanish. Next month, they’ll release their third album – Build, produced by wunderkind Todd Sickafoose – the first in which English is the predominant language.
Based in San Francisco, the bandmembers – Aaron Kierbel, Safa Shokrai, Misha Khalikulov and Mario Alberto Silva – hail from all across the globe, and their music tackles such themes as love and romance, as well as the plight of migrants, the collapse of capitalism and the rise of populist movements from Tunisia to Chile to Athens to Wall Street.
Rupa & the April Fishes will be making their Nippertown concert debut at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy on Saturday, capping off the day-long Bike!Bike! Northeast gathering. The concert begins at 8pm, and admission is $10.
BUT WAIT… we’re giving away a pair of FREE TIX to a lucky Nippertown reader! To enter the contest, just post a comment below. Please leave your email address, too. We won’t publish it, but we’ll use it to contact you if you win. The winner will be selected at random and notified on Friday. Good luck! Congratulations to the winner, who has been notified by email.
