Over the course of their long musical career together, they’ve been a jug band, a folk-rock band, a country band and a bluegrass band, but they’ve always been the Dirt Band.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band have done so many things since their first hit back in 1967, “Buy for Me the Rain.” They landed a Top 10 pop hit with the classic “Mr. Bojangles” in 1971. They made music history – literally – with the landmark “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” album in 1973. And they rose to the top of the country charts with “Fishin’ in the Dark” in 1987.
They’ve shared stages with everyone from the Doors to Jack Benny to Aerosmith. They jammed with everyone from Doc Watson to Dizzy Gillespie. They were Steve Martin’s band on his hit, “King Tut.”
And they’re doin’ it… The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – featuring Jeff Hanna, Jimmie McFadden, John McEuen and Bob Carpenter – make a tour stop at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall on Thursday night, and they’re bringing along Ray Benson and Texas swing kings Asleep at the Wheel to share the evening with them.
