The Chronicles Win the Downtown Albany JazzFest Competition

Eight local jazz bands took over eight downtown nightclubs and restaurants on Friday evening for the second annual Downtown Albany JazzFest Competition, sponsored by the Downtown Albany BID.

And the Chronicles, who performed at the Bayou Cafe, emerged as the winners, as voted on by the general public.

Co-founded by hornmen Bryan Brundige and Jeff Nania in 2009, the Chronicles are equally at home in a jazz setting, a hipster alt-rock club or a jam-band funk fest.

And in fact with their victory at the Downtown Albany JazzFest Competition, it means that the Chronicles will be opening the Port of Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival today (Saturday, September 8).

But it also means that the Chronicles are scheduled to do double duty today. So if you can’t catch ’em at the Riverfront Jazz Fest, you’ll have a second opportunity today when they take the main stage at the Local Legends Live festival at the Empire State Plaza in Albany at 4pm. UPDATE: The Local Legends Live festival at the Empire State Plaza has been cancelled due to the impending weather…

Obviously the Chronicles have got something goin’ on…

The rest of the line-up at the Port of Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival includes Way Down (1:15pm); the Pedrito Martinez Group featuring Araicne Trujillo (2:30pm); Delfeayo Marsalis (4pm); Charlie Hunter (5:30pm); and Terri Lyne Carrington’s Mosaic Project featuring Nona Hendryx and Gretchen Parlato (7pm). A fireworks display at 8:30pm will conclude the fest.

Admission is FREE. The rain location for the fest is the Palace Theatre in Albany.
