Festival Fever: Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, 7/27-29/12

Falcon Ridge Folk Festival 2012

The seemingly never-ending parade of summer music festivals continues with the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival at Dodds Farm in Hillsdale this weekend. Along with last month’s Old Songs fest, it’s the biggest and best annual folk-oriented festival. But while Old Songs focuses on traditional folk music, Falcon Ridge highlights the contemporary singer-songwriter end of the folk spectrum.

Of course, there are some folk musicians who blur those lines of distinction, and several performers who played at the Old Songs fest last month will also step into the spotlight at Falcon Ridge – including Brother Sun, Ellis, the Andrew & Noah Band and Spuyten Duyvil.

Among the many other singer-songwriters slated for main stage performances at Falcon Ridge are Eilen Jewell, Todd Sheaffer, Tracy Grammar, Nerissa & Katryna Nields, John Flynn, the Grand Slambovians, Rod McDonald, Holly Near and Aztec Two-Step (who will wrap it up with the closing performance of the festival at 5:15pm on Sunday (July 29).

The fest runs from Friday thru Sunday and features four different stages, so there’s always something going on that’s bound to capture your fancy – including sessions and workshops on songwriting, Cajun dancing, the blues, storytelling and much more. There will be several tributes to the late singer-songwriter Dave Carter, and the “Toast & Jam” session at the workshop stage at 5pm on Saturday will pay tribute to many of the great musicians we have recently lost – including Doc Watson, Levon Helm and Earl Scruggs.

All-festival tix for Falcon Ridge are $155 with camping; $125 without. Single day tix tix are $40 on Friday and Sunday; $50 on Saturday. There’s a $10 discount for single day tix for students and seniors. Children 12 and under are free. The music at Falcon Ridge kicks off at 12noon on Friday and wraps up at 6:30pm on Sunday.
