Saturday night (May 19) is gonna be one serious, extra special, double-barrelled celebration at Skidmore College’s Filene Recital Hall in Saratoga Springs. UPDATE: The venue for the concert has changed. The show will now take place at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs.

First off, it’s the 52nd anniversary celebration of the Spa City’s internationally renowned coffeehouse, Caffe Lena.

Secondly, it’s a centennial celebration for the godfather of American folk music, Woody Guthrie, who penned such classic songs as “Pretty Boy Floyd,” “Pastures of Plenty,” “Hard Travelin’,” “Deportees,” “Roll On Columbia,” “Vigilante Man” and one of the best-known American songs of all time, “This Land Is Your Land,” in addition to his countless Dust Bowl ballads.

Veteran Texas troubadour Butch Hancock will be the headliner for the show. Hancock may be best known as one-third of the legendary Lone Star band the Flatlanders (along with Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore), but he has had quite an impressive solo career, as well. Rolling Stone has hailed him as “a raspy-voiced West Texas mystic with an equal affinity for romantic border balladry and Zen paradox,” and Butch’s annual tributes to Woody in Austin and Dallas have been popular with Lone Star folkies for years.

But there’s much more to Saturday’s concert shindig. Emceed by Woody-lovin’ “maximum solo acoustic” musician Michael Eck, the Woody Guthrie Centennial/Caffe Lena 52nd Anniversary bash will also feature a half dozen of Nippertown’s finest bands and musicians who have been touched by Guthrie’s timeless music – Sgt. Dunbar & the Hobo Banned, the Bluebillies, Kate McDonnell, Rich Bala (of the Barefoot Boys), George Wilson (of the Whippersnappers) and Kim & Clyde (featuring Kim Kilby of Tern Rounders and Steven “Cousin Clyde” Davies of Ramblin Jug Stompers).

The festivities will get underway at 7pm on Saturday (May 19) at Caffe Lena, and tix are available here for $25.

BUT WAIT… Have we got a deal for you! We’re giving away a PAIR OF FREE TIX to the show to not one, but two lucky Nippertown readers! To enter the contest, just post a comment below. Please leave your email address, too. We won’t publish it, but we’ll use it to contact you if you win. The winner will be selected at random and notified on Friday. Enter today! Good luck!
