“Growing up, I listened to pretty much whatever was on the radio at the time. And I was pretty hip to things like Parliament and Funkadelic and Earth, Wind & Fire.

But on the jazz tip, I think that the first records that I bought were Duke Ellington’s ‘Seventieth Birthday Concert,’ ‘The Billie Holiday Story, Volume III’ (which is a Columbia re-issue), ‘Basie Jam III’ on the Pablo label and Eddie Harris’ ‘Playing With Myself.’”

Jazz saxophone powerhouse James Carter has played around Nippertown in a number of different configurations, including recent stops at The Egg that paid tribute to Billie Holiday and Django Reinhardt. At 7:30pm on Sunday, he returns to The Egg in Albany with his first local showcase of his Organ Trio, which also features Gerard Gibbs on organ and Leonard King on drums. Tix are $28.
