3/9/12: Today’s Tips: Friday

MUSIC: The McKrells @ SPAC’s Spa Little Theater, Saratoga Springs. Call it a semi-reunion. Bandleader Kevin McKrell welcomes back former McKrells’ banjo master Chris Leske to kick off the St. Patrick’s Day celebration of Celtic music a week early. Also joining in the rousing festivities are Kate McKrell (vocals/guitar/bodhran), Doug Moody (vocals/fiddle) and Seth Warden (guitar/vocals). 7:30pm. $15 general admission.

FILM/MUSIC: Professor Louie & the Crowmatix @ The Linda, Albany. An evening of movies and music with the Crowmatix providing a live soundtrack to the 1902 classic sci-fi film “A Trip To The Moon,” followed by “Woodstock-Siberia Blues Express,” a 25-minute documentary film of Prof. Louie’s tours in Russia. The night will conclude with a concert by the band. 8pm. $15.

MUSIC: Expensive Looks @ 51 3rd, Troy. Inyourspeakers Media showcases the sonic layersmith along with electronic future-rock purveyors Starscream and RPI-based down-tempo artist Vulpixic. 8:30pm. $10.

MUSIC: Girls of Porn @ the Upstate Artists Guild, Albany. It’s the the kick-off show for their national tour which continues through most of the rest of the month. Sharing the bill tonight will be Monster Movie, Planet Eater, Century Plants and DJ Eric Savage. 8pm. $4.

MUSIC: Brother Sun @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. The dynamic contemporary folk trio of Pat Wictor, Greg Greenway and Joe Jencks. 8pm. $18.

CIRCUS: Bindlestiff Family Cirkus @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. Ringmistress Philomena presents aerialist Tanya Gagne (of the Wau-Wau Sisters), the unique comedy of Adam Kuchler, the enchanting music of Sabrina Chap and burlesque diva the World Famous BOB, known for her incredible ability to mix martinis in her cleavage. And more… 9pm. $20; $5 discount for those in clown make-up.

MUSIC: Bustle In Your Hedgerow @ Bearsville Theater, Woodstock. All-star Led Zeppelin tribute band featuring Marco Benevento, Joe Russo, Dave Dreiwitz and Scott Metzger. 9pm. $20.

MUSIC: Brian Patneaude @ One Caroline, Saratoga Springs. The saxman teams up with keyboardist Dave Gleason for a duo performance. 7:30pm.

FILM: “Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow” @ Time + Space Limited, Hudson. A mesmerizing portrait of the artist Anselm Kiefer by acclaimed filmmaker Sophie Fiennes, the documentary is part tribute and part deconstruction; aided by beautiful widescreen cinematography. 5:30pm. $7; students $5. Through Saturday.

MUSIC: Taina Asili & Gaetano Vaccaro @ Carmen’s Cafe, Troy. Latin folk music, flamenco and more. 6 & 8pm. $5.

OPERA: Elena Langer’s “Four Sisters” and Jean-Philippe Rameau‘s “Nelee et Myrthis” @ Bard College’s Fisher Center, Annanadale-on-Hudson. The double-bill of one-act operas benefits the scholarship fund of the Conservatory Graduate Vocal Arts Program and the Conservatory Orchestra. 8pm. $15, $25, $35 & $100. Also at 3pm on Sunday.
