This Week’s SPAC Concert Season Update

The exciting New Orleans trumpeter Mario Abney is the newest addition to the line-up for the Freihofer Saratoga Jazz Festival at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Abney and his band, the Abney Effect, made their Freihofer debut in 2010, and they were unquestionably the brightest new discovery of the fest. This year, they’ll be performing twice – once on the amphitheater stage, once at the gazebo – on Saturday, June 30.

Also new at SPAC this week, Steve Ross will be returning with two performances of his new cabaret show “C’Mon and Hear! The Songs of Irving Berlin.” Performances will take place at SPAC’s Spa Little Theater at 2pm on Sunday, August 19 and at 8pm on Tuesday, August 21, as part of the 2012 Live From the Algonquin cabaret series.

  1. Michael Hochanadel says:

Mario Abney is too cool: He moved to New Orleans AFTER Katrina and would up living in his car after a professional rough patch – then the car was repo’ed. So he played on the streets and built a buzz so big that Wynton Marsalis bought him the copper trumpet in the photo and he got some spots on “Treme.” His clarinet player toots an orange plastic instrument and is about as wide as Mario is tall: 5’2″.
