Can you open this for us? We don't have thumbs.

Can you open this for us? We don't have thumbs.

We’d like to send out our best wishes for a very happy new year, as well as a great big thank-you to everyone who dropped by this week to add encouragement, support and, yes, criticism, too. And thanks for helping to spread the word about Nippertown.com.

Of course, we couldn’t possibly cover the wide, wonderful scope of offerings around town without a dedicated and devoted bunch of wonderful writers, photographers, artists, tipsters and other assorted enablers who continually enrich us all with their contributions. So a big salute goes out to this week’s community contributors:

Kirsten Ferguson
Larry Murray
Fred Rudofsky
J Hunter
Mike Hotter
Mr. Eck
Bowtie
Richard Brody
Tim Livingston
Matt Mac Haffie
Timothy Reidy
Al Goldberg
Michael Seinberg
David Brickman
Gail Burns
Justin Mikulka

Please consider adding your name to this list. Just send us something – a review, preview, interview, photo, list, rant, crayon drawing or whatever’s on your mind. Remember, Nippertown is your hometown, and we can’t possibly do this without your help.

Thanks to the fine folks who privided us with cool giveaway merch – tickets, CDs, downloads and other swag – for the faithful Nippertown readers:

Spectrum 8 Theatres, Albany

And thanks to all of the folks from the area venues and organizations who were gracious enough to provide us with review tickets and/or photo passes for their events:

Putnam Den, Saratoga Springs
Jillian’s, Albany
WEQX-FM, Manchester
Old Songs, Voorheesville
The Times Union Center, Albany

Thanks for keeping Nippertown alive… and lively.

Happy New Year from Nippertown,

Best of 2011: Al Goldberg’s Top 5 CDs

December 30th, 2011, 12:00 pm by Greg
The BoDeans: Indigo Dreams

Although I didn’t make it out to as many shows as I would’ve liked, there were certainly many CDs purchased this past year. Not all of them came out in 2011, however, so it would be hard to substantiate a Top 10. Here though, are my personal Top 5…

5. Sam Llanas’ “4 A.M. (The Way Home)”

4. Glen Campbell’s “Ghost on the Canvas”

3. Foo Fighters’ “Wasting Light”

2. R.E.M.’s “Collapse into Now”

LIVE: The Trans-Siberian Orchestra @ the Times Union Center, 12/26/11

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra @ The Times Union Center (photo by Michael Seinberg)

Considering what a Christmas tradition they’ve become here in Nippertown and all around the country, it’s difficult to believe that the Trans-Siberian Orchestra only launched their career in 1996. It seems as though they’ve been making their regular holiday rounds at such Local 518 venues as the Palace Theatre, Proctors and the Pepsi Arena/Times Union Center for at least as long as Ole Saint Nick has been hitching up his team of reindeer.

The power chords. The heavy metal shredding. The prog-rock grandiosity. The lights, the lights, the lights… You get the idea, right?
