11/20/11: Today’s Tips: Sunday

MUSIC: The Either/Orchestra @ the Sanctuary for Independent Media, Troy. A return visit by the internationally renowned 10-piece jazz ensemble that combines the agility and freedom of a jazz combo, the raw power and subtle coloring of a jazz orchestra, and the deep grooves of Afro-Latin music. Featuring the premiere of Russ Gershon’s “The Collected Unconscious,” a new suite commissioned by Chamber Music America. 3pm. $10.

MUSIC: Shonen Knife @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. The legendary Japanese all-female pop-punksters make a Nippertown pit-stop in support of their latest album, “Osaka Ramones: Tribute To The Ramones.” With the Last Conspirators. 7pm. $14.

FILM/DISCUSSION: “Happy” @ the Sage College of Albany’s Opalka Gallery, Albany. The Center for Documentary Arts presents Roko Belic’s documentary which examines the emerging field of positive psychology. Followed by a discussion with positive psychology educator Mary Judd. 4pm.

MUSIC: The Sam Bush Band @ The Egg, Albany. The newgrass mandolin master is back. 7:30pm. $29.50.

MUSIC: Hudson River Music Hall Hayride @ the Hudson River Music Hall, Hudson Falls. The Lazy Suns headline the twang-fest which also spotlights alt-country faves the Nellies and the countrified indie roots sounds of Brooklyn’s Bel Aire. 6pm.

MUSIC: Thurston Moore & the Psychic Hearts Band @ the Flywheel Arts Collective, Easthampton. Performing Moore’s 1995 album “Psychic Hearts” in its entirety. 7pm. $12.

MUSIC: “A Thanksgiving Jazz Festival” @ First reformed Church, Schenectady. Featuring Brian Patneaude, Nat Phipps, Pete Toigo, Tim Coakley, Mike Benedict, Mike Lawrence, Lee Russo, Tom D’Andrea, Peg Delaney, Bill Delaney, Rick Rosoff and Mark Anthony. 5-7pm. $10 in advance (377-2201); $12 at the door; seniors $10; children & students $5.

MUSIC: Skidmore Small Jazz Ensembles @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. Benefit for Caffe Lena. 7pm. $5.

    Just wanted to say thanks for the info about ‘Happy – a documentary’. After you mentioned it in the sunday tips, I saw it, (along with a practically standing room crowd!) It was a GREAT film, and had a real life lesson – maybe we have already heard this one, but find something you like and that makes you happy, and just do it. Cultivate your own good feelings and reason for living…

    Also, I had not heard of the Center for Documentary Arts previously – will be looking more into that, as it sounded like some good stuff is happening there…
