The fine folks at WCDB-FM sponsored a Hump Day triple-header last week, attracting a larger than usual mid-week crowd to Valentine’s Music Hall.
Since the start of September, Baltimore-based duo Wye Oak have been on the road opening for Yo La Tengo and the National, then Okkervil River and now Explosions in the Sky. Their lone night of the tour as headliners found them right here in Nippertown. And we were damn glad to have ’em.
Making the evening doubly sweet was the Nippertown debut of Hilly Eye, the duo of vocalist-guitarist Amy Klein alongside drummer-vocalist Catherine Tung. And yes, it was Klein’s second Albany performance in just six weeks, having previous ripped up Rest Fest with her other band, Titus Andronicus, on the eve of Hurricane Irene.
We heartily agree with Wye Oak, who tweeted later in the evening: “enjoyed the shit out of @amyandronicus in albany tonight. for the record. killer lady.”
And, of course, we cannot forget Nippertown’s own Red Lions, who delivered their own first-rate performance, as their sound continues to evolve.
