9/27/11: Today’s Tips: Tuesdays

MUSIC: Primus @ the Palace Theatre, Albany. No question about it, bassist-mastermind Les Claypool thinks outside the box. His offbeat, Zappa-like humor shines through on the band’s new album, “Green Naugahyde, which also features long-time guitarist Larry LaLonde and back-to-the-fold drummer Jay Lane. 8pm. $29.50, $34.50, $40.

MUSIC: The Avett Brothers @ Brewery Ommegang, Cooperstown. Rollickin,’ rompin’, raw and raucous, the brothers Avett rip it up. With Brandi Carlile and Nicole Atkins. 8pm. $50, includes overnight camping for the first 1,500 tix-buyers.

MUSIC: Americana Tuesdays @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. Host band Dan Johnson & His Expert Sidemen welcome SPAC Battle of the Bands winners Eastbound Jesus and singer-songwriter Matt Durfee. 8pm. $5.

TALK: Michael Century @ EMPAC at RPI, Troy. The RPI music professor conducts the first in a three-part lecture series, “Extraordinary Freedom Machines: Vignettes in the History of a Multimedia Century.” 12noon. FREE.

READING: Eliza Griswold @ UAlbany’s Campus Center Assembly Hall, Albany. The journalist and author of The New York Times nonfiction bestseller, “The Tenth Parallel: Dispatches from the Fault Line Between Christianity and Islam” (2010) reads from her exploration of diverse societies that exist along the line of latitude where the two religions collide. 8pm. FREE.

MUSIC: After the Burial @ Northern Lights, Clifton Park. The Crush Them All tour rumbles into Clifton Park with Veil of May in the c-headlining slot. Getting the evening off to a start will be Misery Signals, Within the Ruins, Structures and Faker. 6:30pm. $17,
