9/26/11: Today’s Tips: Monday

MUSIC: Drag the River @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. It’s Punk Rock Monday, and tonight they’re serving up a whole lotta rough, raw, raucous twang. With Lenny Lashley and local roots punksters the Slaughterhouse Chorus. 8pm.

BURLESQUE: The Bing Bamboo Room @ Savannah’s/Dublin Underground, Albany. Emcee Guy Smiley and a parade of gals, comics and who-knows-what. 8pm. $10.

MUSIC: The Bruce Katz Band @ the Bearsville Theater, Woodstock. The keyboardist has released 6 CDs as a leader and has appeared on nearly 70 other CDs with the likes of Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard, Little Milton, Jimmy Witherspoon, John Hammond, David โ€œFatheadโ€ Newman and many others. In addition to leading his own band, he is currently a member of the Gregg Allman Band and the John Hammond Band and performs with Delbert McClinton as well. 8pm. FREE.

MUSIC: “Monday Jazz” @ Taylor Music Center’s Emerson Auditorium at Union College, Schenectady. The first in a four-concert series exploring the evolution of jazz, featuring Tim Olsen leading some of Nippertown’s top players. 3:05pm. FREE.

TALK: Dr. Alvin Zak @ Schenectady County Public Library, Schenectady. The author, songwriter and UAlbany music professor reads from and discusses his book, “I Donโ€™t Sound Like Nobody: Remaking Music in 1950โ€™s America.” 12noon. FREE.

MUSIC: Homemade Rockets @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. 8pm. FREE.

FILM: “Battleship Potemkin” @ Proctors, Schenectady. With live organ accompaniment by Avery Tunningley. 7pm. $12; seniors & students $10.
