9/25/11: Today’s Tips: Sunday

FESTIVAL/MUSIC: FreshGrass: A Festival of Bluegrass & Art @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. The massive MASS MoCA hit a home run as the host of the Solid Sound Festival. Can they do it again with a bluegrass fest? Today’s line-up features performances by Aoife O’Donovan of Crooked Still (11am), Ramblin Jug Stompers at (12:30pm), Dave Mayfield (2pm), the Del McCoury Band (3:30pm) and the Yonder Mountain String Band (5pm). $48. FESTIVAL: Adirondack Balloon Festival @ Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport, Queensbury. The final day of the four-day fest kicks off with the launch of 85-90 balloons at 6:30am (weather permitting). That’s what we call breath-taking. FREE.

MUSIC: Fleet Foxes @ Mountain Park, Holyoke. The final outdoor show of the season on the mountain. A beautiful way to say goodbye to summer and welcome autumn. The Walkmen open. 7pm. $32.50.

TALK: Marie Triller @ the Albany Institute of History & Art, Albany. In honor of September 11, the award-winning Nippertown photographer will be talking about her new book, “Ten Years: Remembering 9/11.” Followed by a Q&A session and book signing. 2pm. FREE. Related story.

MUSIC/FUNDRAISER: A Benefit Concert for Smokey Greene @ Roaring Brook Ranch, Lake George. The country music and bluegrass pioneer is undergoing treatment for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and playing a benefit for him are Cabin Fever, Al & Kathy Bain, City Limits, Jim Gaudet & the Railroad Boys, Leigh Gibson, Jonesville and others… Related story. 1pm. $10.

MUSIC/FUNDRAISER: Benefit Concert in the Park @ the Main Street Gazebo, Delanson. A concert to raise funds to help out Schoharie flood victims, Featuring Mark Baptiste, Nancy Crowther, Chrissie Van Wormer, Jody Orlando and Cavanaugh & Kavanaugh. 2-5pm. Donation.

MUSIC: George Thorogood & the Destroyers @ The Egg, Albany. One bourbon, one scotch, and one beer… 8pm. $44.50, $49.50.

MUSIC: Joy Kills Sorrow @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. The chamber-folk ensemble showcases their latest album, “This Unknown Science.” With Rosary Beard. 7pm. Related story.

FESTIVAL/FILM: Woodstock Film Festival @ various location, Woodstock and surrounding communities. The fest continues with events featured at nearly a dozen different venues. If we had to pick one must-see flick on today’s schedule, it would be Sam Levinson’s “Another Happy Day” (12:30pm at the Woodstock Playhouse), starring Ellen Barkin, this year’s recipient of the fest’s Excellence in Acting Award. FILM: “Red State” @ Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield. A screening of writer-director Kevin Smith’s controversial new horror/thriller followed by an interactive webcast Q&A session with Smith. 7pm. $25. Related story.

MUSIC: Doug Van Nort & Al Margolis (aka If, Bwana) @ the Arts Center of the Capital Region, Troy. Co-sponsored by the Albany Sonic Arts Collective, the duo utilizes two distinct approaches to manipulating sampled material, grabbing one another’s sound on the fly and forming an endless feedback loop of re-imagined sonic identities. With Mysterybear and Julia Alsarraf. 2pm. $5.

MUSIC: Bayside @ Northern Lights, Clifton Park. With Transit and State Champs. 7:30pm. $15.

FILM: “Battleship Potemkin” @ Proctors, Schenectady. With live organ accompaniment by Avery Tunningley. 2pm. $12; seniors & students $10. Also 7pm on Monday.

MUSIC: AnDa Union @ Colonial Theatre, Pittsfield. While performing traditional Tuvan throat singing and playing traditional Chinese instruments, the ensemble holds onto the essence of Mongolian music while creating a form of music that is all its own. 2pm. $25; children & students under 16 $15.
