Let’s face it – the Saratoga Performing Arts Center isn’t exactly a hot-bed for hip-hop. So when a rap show does oh-so-rarely drop into the amphitheater, it’s a special occasion. And last Wednesday, more than 15,000 fans were on hand to revel in the rap of New Orleans’ tattooed hip-hop hero, Lil Wayne.
Some of the openers – notably Keri Hilson and Rick Ross – stirred the pot a bit, but the concert didn’t boil over until Lil Wayne stepped out into the spotlight with his sunglasses, a baseball cap and a microphone. That’s all he needed.
Bouncing around the bandstand and its extended runway, Lil Wayne was definitely in his element, exciting the audience and shaking a few hands along the way. His band – featuring an electric bass, guitar, drummer and the mandatory DJ – rocked SPAC on its foundation with their combined, earth-shaking beats.
Song after song brought on loud cheers from the crowd, thundering throughout SPAC and likely heard in downtown Saratoga Springs, too.
