It’s the Battle of the Jazz Bands in Albany

The inaugural Downtown Albany Jazz Fest Competition will take place in a variety of downtown Albany bars and restaurants from 6-10pm on Friday, September 9, which just happens to be the day before the 10th annual Port of Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival lands at Riverfront Park in Corning Preserve.

Here’s how it works:

Post continues below...

Interested jazz bands must fill out an application form and submit it to the Downtown Albany BID along with two songs and a photo. Deadline for submissions is 3pm on Wednesday August 10.

A panel of judges will select the bands to perform on Friday, September 9 at one of the downtown venues (which at the moment includes Jillian’s, R Bar, Franklin’s Tower, Bayou Café, McGeary’s, Taste, Pearl Street Pub, 74 State, Figure 10 and Blue 82).

Each band will receive a $100 stipend. ($100 for a Friday night gig? Gee, I know times are tough, but $100 barely covers the bar tab for some of the jazz quartets that we know…)

Attendees – you know, the general bar-hopping public – will then vote for their favorite performers of the night. (Hmmm, not sure how we’re supposed to see enough of 10 different bands in 10 different venues in just four hours to offer a fair assessment, but we’ll try…), and the top vote-getter will be awarded the opening slot at 12noon for the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival on Saturday, September 10.

So get those applications in, and good luck!
