Festival Fever: Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, 7/22-24/11

Falcon Ridge Folk FestivalThe never-ending parade of music festivals continues with the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival at Dodds Farm in Hillsdale this weekend. Along with last month’s Old Songs fest, it’s the biggest and best annual folk-oriented festival. But while Old Songs focuses on traditional folk music, Falcon Ridge highlights the contemporary singer-songwriter end of the folk spectrum.

Among the many singer-songwriters slated for main stage performances are Mary Chapin Carpenter (who closes out the fest on Sunday evening), Mary Gauthier, Greg Brown, Tracy Grammar, Susan Werner, Dan Navarro and Buskin & Batteau. One of the fest’s highlights promises to be Friday’s Nippertown debut of the new folk super-trio Red Horse, which features Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky. Each of them will also offer up solo sets on Saturday.

The fest isn’t all about acoustic guitars, either. Falcon Ridge also welcomes the folk-rock of the Grand Slambovians and Professor Louie & the Crowmatix, the electrifying blues of Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson & the Magic Rockers and the sizzling zydeco of CJ Chenier & the Red Hot Louisiana Band.

The fest runs from Friday thru Sunday and features four different stages, so there’s always something going on that’s bound to capture your fancy. For example, the workshop stage will host a tribute to the late Jack Hardy (featuring Terry Kitchen, Scott Alarik, Mary Gauthier, Lucy Kaplansky, John Gorka, Red Molly, Brother Sun, Dan Navarro and more), as well as a workshop devoted to the songs of the Band (featuring Professor Louie, Terry Kitchen, Annie Wentz, the Clayfoot Strutters and others).

All-festival tix are $150 with camping; $120 without. Single day tix tix are $40 on Friday and Sunday; $50 on Saturday. There’s a $10 discount for single day tix for students and seniors. Children 12 and under are free.
The music at Falcon Ridge kicks off at 10am on Friday and wraps up at 7:30pm on Sunday.
