7/14/11: Today’s Tips: Thursday

FESTIVAL/MUSIC: The Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival @ Walsh Farm, Oak Hill. The gates are open for Day One of the fabulous, four-day fest, one of the finest bluegrass fests in the country, believe it or not. Today’s performers include the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, Red Stick Ramblers, Greensky Bluegrass, Donna the Buffalo, the Hillbenders, Nippertown’s own Gibson Brothers and lots more. And don’t miss the Chris Thile & Michael Daves duo on the Main Stage at 8:30pm. Music gets underway at 2pm and goes late into the night. One-day tix for today are $50; an all-fest ticket (including camping) is $180. Through Sunday.

MUSIC: Carbon Leaf @ Corning Preserve’s Riverfront Park, Albany. This week’s installment of Alive at Five goes Celtic with the Richmond-based rockers. Sharing the bill is Enter the Haggis, who put a Canadian spin on their Celtic sound. 5pm. FREE.

MUSIC: Rory Block @ The Linda, Albany. Chatham’s Queen of the Acoustic Blues and five-time Blues Music Award winner plays an all-too-rare Albany gig. 8pm. $22.

MUSIC: The Fighting 86’s @ McGeary’s, Albany. Looking for still more Irish music after Alive at Five? What better place than McGeary’s Pub? And what better band than the Fighting 86’s? 8pm.

MUSIC: The Penny Knight Band @ Dublin’s, Troy. After a 25-year hiatus, former Nippertown rockers PKB reunited for a handful of gigs last fall, and the shows went so well that they’re back for more. With Chris Busone. 8pm.

MUSIC: The Steve Lambert Sextet @ Jay Street, Schenectady. The Jazz on Jay lunchtime concert series continues with the fab trumpeter and his band. 12noon. FREE.

MUSIC: New York City Ballet Musicians & Friends @ Saratoga Arts, Saratoga Springs. Violinist Luellen Abdoo leads the second Thursdays at Noon chamber concert, featuring musicians from the New York City Ballet Orchestra and friends. 12noon. $5.

DANCE: The New York City Ballet @ the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs. Two performances today. For their 2pm matnee, NYC Ballet presents the classic “Jewels” (Fauré, Stravinsky, & Tschaikovsky/Balanchine). $27.50; seniors, students and children $23.50; lawn $10; kids 12 and under free on the lawn. Then at 8pm, it’s College Date Night featuring “Apollo” (Stravinsky/Balanchine), “Tarantella” (Gottschalk & Kay/Balanchine), “Polyphonia” (Ligeti/Wheeldon) and “Agon” (Stravinsky/Balanchine). $26, $47, $54.50, $64.50, $72.50; lawn $20; kids 12 and under free on the lawn.

MUSIC: Grupo Fantasma @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. The Grammy Award-winning, 10-piece band outta Austin fires up their sizzling Latin funk sound. 8pm. $18.

MUSIC: Sludge Factory @ Pearl Street, Albany. The Alice in Chains tribute band cranks it out for a post-Alive at Five street party just a bit up the hill from Riverfront Park. With Saratoga’s Skeletons in the Piano. 7:30pm.
