FESTIVAL/MUSIC: Freedom Square Festival @ Freedom Square, North Troy. A community celebration featuring the Ethiopian pop music of Boston’s Debo Band. With Sumac, S.K.A.T.E. and the Missing Link Street Ministry Men’s Choir. Details here. 4-8pm. FREE.

MUSIC: The ReadNex Poetry Squad @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. The socially conscious hip-hop posse was one of the biggest hits of Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival last month. 8pm. $19; teens & kids $10.

MUSIC: The Don Byron New Gospel Quintet @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. The marvelously eclectic clarinetist-saxophonist explores the many facets of black religious music with vocalist DK Dyson, pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Brad Jones and drummer Pheeroan akLaff. 9pm. $18.

MUSIC: The Linda Oh Quartet @ Skidmore College’s Zankel Music Center, Saratoga Springs. Last year, jazz bassist Oh and her band were one of the discoveries at Freihofer’s Jazz Fest; now they’re back for a free show at Skidmore. 8pm. FREE.

OPERA: “Carmen” @ Glimmerglass Opera, Cooperstown. Georges Bizet’s timeless tale of passion, seduction and jealousy kicks off the 2011 summer season at Nippertown’s finest opera house. With Ginger Costa-Jackson in the title role. 7pm. $66. Through August 23.

MUSIC: Heather Maloney and Brad Yoder @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. It’s another “See the Future! Saturday Night Sampler” concert at the Caffe with a pair of up-and-coming singer-songwriters. 8pm. $10.

MUSIC: Possessed by Paul James @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. Austin-based alt-country one man band plays his only New England show in support of his new, award-winning album, “Feed the Family” on Hillgrass Bluebilly Records. With Yard Sale and the CD release party for Henry’s Rifle. 8pm. $10.

MUSIC: Woodstock Beat 2011 @ Maverick Concerts, Woodstock. The Canadian Brass and NEXUS Percussion join forces for a holiday benefit concert. 8pm. $25-$175.

LIVE RADIO/MUSIC: “A Prairie Home Companion” @ Tanglewood, Lenox. Garrison Keillor and the Lake Wobegon gang are joined by Broadway actress Christine DiGiallonardo, Nickel Creek alum Sara Watkins, gospel singing sisters Jearlyn & Jevetta Steele and Chris Thile rocking the mandolin.5:45pm. $21-$71. MUSIC: Professor Louie & the Crowmatix @ the Bearsville Theater, Woodstock. They were 2010 Grammy nominee and 2011 Canada South Blues Hall of Fame Inductees. They’re also the only band to have a live concert recording released by the New York State Museum. With Mr. Roper. 9pm. $15.
