“I don’t really remember the first albums that I bought. But I remember that the first album that I was really conscious of listening to was a Sarah Vaughan record where she did all Michel Legrand music. That had a major impact on me, and that was the first record that I really remember.

“Of course, I used to listen to the music of the time, like Motown music, but that Sarah Vaughan album was my first really conscious listening experience.”

Jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves teams up with Angelique Kidjo and Lizz Wright to present “Sing the Truth!,” a tribute to the jazz and civil rights legacies of recently departed legends Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Odetta. The tribute will close out the two-day Freihofer Jazz Festival at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs at 7:40pm on Sunday, June 26. Other performers taking the festival stage on June 25-26 include Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, the Bad Plus, Donald Harrison’s “A Night in Treme,” George Wein & the Newport All Stars, David Binney and more.
